Grills can be bought in may styles, designs and sizes for many situations.

Cooking food over a grill is one of the great pleasures, especially when it's outside on a nice warm day. Who doesn't enjoy a barbecue when the weather allows. Grills are available for many situations, from compact grills perfect for camping to large sophisticated outdoor kitchens. The various forms of fueling a barbecue grill have their own advantages and disadvantages, and you have to consider the pros and cons of each type to decide which is right for you.

Charcoal Grills

charcoal grillsCharcoal grills are traditional in nature and are fueled by charcoal briquettes or natural lump charcoal. Charcoal briquettes are made from compressed charcoal and are of a uniform shape, they are very efficient at generating heat and can remain hot for longer than lump charcoal. Lump charcoal on the other hand has many devotees claiming the more authentic barbecue smell, high heat and lack of binders found in charcoal briquettes make for a more enjoyable cooking experience.

Maybe one downside of charcoal grills is that you have to wait for the heat to build up high enough to start cooking. Eventually the charcoal begins to cool, which can be a drawback if you are cooking large amounts of food over an extended period as the charcoal may not remain hot enough to finish cooking. Basically, you do not have the control over how hot the charcoal burns at and how long it remains hot for.

Virtually every style of barbecue have models designed to burn charcoal from small camping barbecues to very large models for cooking large amounts of fuel.

Gas Grills

gas grillsGas grills usually employ propane or natural gas for fuel. Gas grills can be purchased in sizes ranging from small camping grills to large industrial models that can cope with cooking for hundreds.

One advantage a gas grill has over charcoal grills is that the heat is available immediately for cooking, the intensity of the heat is controllable and as long as a gas bottle does not run out, (keep a spare), cooking time can be for as long as you want with no limits.

Many dismiss gas as a fuel because it does not produce the authentic barbecue smell of charcoal, but wood chips etc. can be added to enhance the aroma of the cooking.

Electric Grills

electric grillsElectric grills are extremely convenient, all that is required is a power source and you are ready to go.

An advantage of electric grills is that you do not rely on ensuring you have charcoal or a gas bottle containing enough gas to last the length of your barbeque. Generally you need to wait for the grill to heat up before cooking, although this is usually not as long as waiting for charcoal to heat up.

Like gas grills, the heat output is variable and there is no limit on how long you can cook for, unlike charcoal.
